Frequently Asked Questions

"Raven Moon" prayer wheel

How are AXIS OF HOPETM Prayer Wheels used?
AXIS OF HOPETM Prayer Wheels are used to celebrate marriages, births, anniversaries, watershed birthdays, life-course changes, and family reunions. They are used for memorials, meditation or simply as decorative sculpture. AXIS OF HOPETM Prayer Wheels are placed in churches of many denominations, health clinics, hospice centers, law offices, parks, libraries, and ecological restoration sites to encourage mindfulness and community goodwill. These prayer wheels are also used as funerary urns to hold sacred a beloved's ashes, or written memorials and photos of their life. Regardless of the use, people tell us AXIS OF HOPETM Prayer Wheels bring them solace and encourage positive change. We hope they bring you peace, harmony, compassion, and healing with each revolution. (Please see Prayer Wheels: Uses / Gift Ideas)
How is a prayer wheel made?
Each AXIS OF HOPETM Prayer Wheel is sculpted of stoneware or porcelain clay that has been "thrown" on a spinning potter's wheel in several parts. Once assembled, the vessel's surface is carved and inscribed with images. Next it is burnished with iron oxides or glazes and kiln-fired to 2,300 degrees F. to make a long-lasting, durable wheel of heirloom quality. Finally it is bolted to a metal turntable with quality bearings, allowing it to revolve easily with a gentle push of the hand. (Please see Artist's Story: Chris's Studio)
How do I display and care for my AXIS OF HOPETM Prayer Wheel?
The prayer wheels can be displayed inside, or outside if protected from a combination of water saturation and freezing weather. Your prayer wheel can be cleaned with mild soap and warm water. The turntable to which the vessel is bolted is made of cast iron. Therefore care should be taken to paint over any scratches that occur to prevent rust.
