Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration:
Inter-racial Community Healing, Whatcom County Courthouse, Bellingham Washington

This MLK prayer wheel took a center stage, literally.

Every year our city holds a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration. It is held in the crowded atrium of the County Court House. As people entered the courthouse door, they were handed a Program with a "tear off section" for writing their ideas on how to make our community more like Dr. King's "I Have A Dream." Some of those thoughts were later shared in the local newspaper.

The design in the wheel's middle shows a sobering diagram of a slave ship with people packed like sardines and chained together. The bottom half shows images of enslavement and racial injustice. The top half of the prayer wheel celebrates a Freedom March flowing out of the upraised hand of Dr. King who said: "We must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.... With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope."
